Goals

Ola and teachers

“I believe I can help provide the best possible education for every child—even during fiscally challenging times. With my problem-solving ability and collaborative style, I believe I can make a difference.”

“My primary goal is to focus district resources on areas that help all students be successful. I want every student to have an excellent teacher, a viable curriculum and strong building leadership that respects all students.”

“A balanced approach is key: listening; finding solutions; and getting people to work together. I have experience doing this. For example, at the initiation of the bond project, I worked with community members to help promote a more "green" or sustainable approach to each one of our construction projects.”

My goals to provide the best possible education for every child are:

  • Maintain a fiscally healthy district. - With the current state of the economy, my number one goal is to keep the district fiscally strong while maintaining a top-notch educational program.
  • Think innovatively about teacher compensation. - I will roll up my sleeves and work collaboratively with the teachers to think innovatively about teacher compensation. BVSD is one of the top three districts in the state because we can attract and retain teachers. We need to compensate them at a level commensurate with their value.
  • Reduce the achievement gap. - The board, in conjunction with the superintendent and his staff, developed measurable 5-year goals in the areas of achievement, equity and climate. The bar has been set higher for students of targeted populations (i.e., low income, special education). I expect to see progress in closing the gap in all three of these areas, and I will hold Dr. King accountable in achieving these benchmarks. In addition, I expect all BVSD students to receive a top-notch education that will prepare them for the next step they plan to take after graduating.
  • Develop a process to engage a broad spectrum of community members. - Communication, or the lack thereof, has been a weakness in the district according to the Communication Audit. I want to help develop a sustainable community engagement process that will include diverse stakeholders so the board learns the views of the district's constituency in order to make sound policy. For example, in the upcoming year, I want to engage our school communities in the difficult discussions of what cuts can be made that will allow us to preserve the core values of each school community.
  • Develop a sustainability policy for our district. - I will continue to push the district toward a green future. The first step will be to implement a sustainability policy that validates the Sustainability Management System. This System promotes healthier school building environments and reduction of use of valuable non-renewable resources.
